Mount Wilson California May 19 Halley’s comet passed the sun as scheduled but Earth’s passage through the tail remains uncertain. Carnegie Observatory reports say the head likely transited on time while the tail’s appearance in the east puzzles observers worldwide.
Eastern United States observers led by Professor Henry Norris Russell of Princeton and Daniel, the comet’s discoverer, found the earth did not pass through Halley’s tail at dawn. They cited the tail’s curve and timing after sunrise as reasons the earth’s passage occurred elsewhere. Observers in Africa and Hawaii reported similar uncertainties as the tail remained north of the ecliptic.
May 19 at Williams Bay Wisconsin reports show the tail of Halley’s comet plainly visible before daybreak. Professors Barnard Frost and Mitchell say the earth may not have passed through the tail though the tail remains in the eastern sky. They offer three possible explanations and stress the unbroken, unchanged tail through dawn.
The balloon expedition to study the tail of Halley's comet began in St. Louis at 6 35 p m and ended near Hillview Greene county at 11 20 p m traveling sixty five miles.
Father Martin Brennan at Kenrick seminary reports thirty sun spots seen yesterday afternoon. One spot estimated at 150000 miles wide, largest ever seen by him, with a tear-like rent near the photosphere. He says disturbances will continue days and pose no immediate danger, not related to a nearby comet.

Four men attempted to rob Peoples National Bank in Wapanucka Oklahoma. A running gun battle with a citizen posse wounded one pursuer. The robbers wrecked the vault with dynamite and fled toward Coalgate on a hand car after forbidden telegraph lines were cut. A posse pursues and expects capture.

New York May 1 Speaker Cannon defended his conduct as speaker during the annual banquet of the National Association of Manufacturers at the Waldorf Astoria. He praised the Republican majority but warned that some in the party and the populist minority threaten effective governance. A heckler shouted Shoot them, and Cannon replied Hanging would be their fate.
Peoria May 19 Negotiations between the United Mine Workers and Illinois operators are expected to end this afternoon with a declared strike after both sides refused to yield on the three main issues.
Assistant Attorney General Oscar Lawler testified under cross examination that three years earlier Glavis had cast reflections on his ability to prosecute coal fin d fraud cases while Lawler was U S attorney for the southern district of California. He said Glavis was untruthful and noted the department of justice investigated and vindicated him. Brandeis pressed to obtain all papers to show if Ballinger knew of Lawler’s old grudge against Glavis. The committee indicated such a request would require a collateral investigation.
The steamship J. Marhoffer, en route from San Francisco to Portland, was burned twenty miles north of Newport, Oregon. Captain Wellander reports nineteen survivors including the captain and his wife reached shore in their boats.
William Jennings Bryan, guest of the Catholic Total Abstinence union of America, opened his lecture tour here with his first platform appearance since returning from South America. He announced plans to proceed to Edinburgh, Scotland, for an international event.

She sold an autographed Barrie photo for 34 dollars, the highest price of her collection, with Roosevelt drawing a 150 dollar bid withdrawn for later bidding. Chase grossed 658 dollars in fifteen minutes on the block.
New York fashion notes describe silhouette and shadow dresses with waistline blouses and skirts under thirty six inches wide. Mme Bertin notes plump figures will find the style challenging while women must master graceful walking with elasticized, restricted hems.

In Pinar Del Rio two massive explosions wrecked the rural guard barracks. Many dead and over 100 wounded, with relief trains rushing to the 108 mile distant scene. Authorities cite possible accident as dynamite collapsed during removal for shipment to Havana.
Albany May 19 The Hin mandreen direct nominations bill urged by Governor Hughes failed to pass the senate by three votes, 28 to 20 against.
Chicago May 1 delegates to the national congress of the socialist party ended three days of debate by adopting a resolution opposing immigrant exclusion while urging legislation to curb the importation of strike breakers and contract laborers.
In Clerwater Nebraska Mrs Hewitt and her children escaped serious harm when a lamp exploded in her hands as she prepared the children for bed. The fire destroyed the Hewitt home and belongings with five reported to suffer damage while no one was burned to death.
Max Thibler a 45 hour old farm laborer was found dead in the court house closet between 6 and 7 last evening by Henry Nye a printer. Officials say death due to alcoholism with liquor on his person. Thibler was married and had no known living relatives in this country. He was believed connected in Germany and received regular remittances. A coroner's inquest was held to determine the cause of death.

Valentine Nebraska May 19 Special to The News court convened with Judge Harrington presiding four criminal cases and numerous civil matters to be tried this term.
Special election in Valentine Nel shows a narrow 140 to 64 vote in favor of donating forty acres for the state experimental farm building. The result comes despite low turnout as public support was broadly expected.
Denver voters appear to have adopted the initiative referendum and recall amendments to the city charter and a water commission proposal. The city will see a three member water commission to decide urban ownership. The aldermanic board will be eleven Democrats, three Republicans, and two Citizens. The board of supervisors will include three Democrats, three Republicans, and one Citizen. The elections commission includes Ellis Meredith, a Citizen candidate, plus two Democrats. Two of three commissioners must share no more than two party ties.
