Washington May 17 United States Senator Bulkeley of Connecticut testified before the house judiciary committee disputing Miles M Dawson’s claim that American fire insurers lacked solvency for San Francisco losses He as president of Aetna Fire Insurance Co said no American firm is unsure of its financial position He acknowledged contributing 5000 to McKinley’s 1896 campaign noting it could have been 20000 and that would be justified.
Commander in Chief James Tanner of the National Grand Army of the Republic attended a reception in Lincoln hosted by the Women’s Relief Corps tied to the Nebraska G A R encampment. Nearly 1,000 people, including Governor Mickey, heard Tanner review Civil War era work by the women and listen to remarks by Mrs. Abbie A. Adams, W R C national president.
The naval appropriation bill, near one hundred million dollars, was completed in the House after a busy session. The new St Frances Catholic Parochial Schoolhouse in Burcin Nebraska was dedicated costing $35,000. Father Provincial from St. Louis, Missouri led the ceremony with about thirty visiting priests present. The dedication included services at the church and meals at the schoolhouse with an evening program by the pupils.
