An explosion at Palos Coal and Coke near Birmingham Alabama kills an estimated 150 to 180 miners. The first victim was found 150 feet from the mine entrance. The chief state inspector and First Aid to Injured society members rush to the scene as a special train departs Birmingham carrying surgeons and aid workers.
Federal Arbitration Board awards 8B. and O. pay to trainmen on New York Central lines east of Buffalo including Boston and Albany. Conductors on through passenger runs between New York and Albany receive a lower rate of pay.
King Edward remains confined to his room suffering a severe bronchial attack. He could not go to the station to greet Queen Alexandra on her return from the continent.
Washington May 5 the senate committee on naval affairs granted the administrations demand for two new battleships and practically decided to accept the house bill provision on the subject.
A special Iowa grand jury indicted Dr. Mary Ida Guthrie in Newton on May 5 for dynamiting Jesse A. Quick of Prairie City on April 23. Bond set at 3000 dollars. Quick is father of John Quick of Norfolk.
The Cleveland building trades union plans to file a demand at the steam shovelers union in Cincinnati to expel President Taft for attending a boycotted baseball game. The boycott started over the use of non union labor on Cleveland's new ball park.
Kansas City observers report Peet Bros Manufacturing Company soap and glycerine plant, among the region s largest, was destroyed by a fire last night causing an estimated loss of one and a half million dollars.
Mayor Harry Leggett and the Dallas city council granted Ethine Gas of Sioux Falls a permit to install a city lighting system. Preliminary steps are under way to macadamize Main street and construct an opera house.
The House approved by 106 to 77 an amendment prohibiting rate increases when a railroad lowers rates in competition with a water route, requiring new justification for any rise. An amendment giving the Interstate Commerce Commission power to fix railroad rates failed 64 to 88.
Senator Bourne, Republican, defended Oregon's primary law and the legislature's election of Senator Chamberlain. He hailed the process as evidence of law's efficacy and noted Chamberlain's June victory over Cake, saying Republicans voted for a Democrat to keep the people's choice intact.
In the senate a dispute arose when Idaho's Senator Heyburn called Senator Bulkeley’s remark insulting. The exchange touched a post office department bill as laughter erupted, prompting Heyburn to demand a ruling on privilege. The chair ruled the Connecticut senator’s remark disparaging to Heyburn, ending the incident.
Philadelphia on May 4 reports more than twenty workers injured in a blast at the M. L. Shoemaker and Company fertilizer plant. Several men are said to have been killed and others missing.
Special to The News from Neligh Nebraska May 5 Judge Welch grants correction of the murder complaint date from December 7 L10 to December 7 10 and overrules motions to continue. Senator Allen objects to witnesses Harrington and Rice but is overruled. W L Staples testifies as the first witness and the trial continues without the jury present at times.
The Hooker County District Court remains undecided on a motion for more time in the McIntyre murder case. Judge Hanna presiding, the timeline for a trial term is unsettled as defendant requests additional preparation. Witness W Rector, held without bail to testify, had traveled from Tenino to here.
Former President Roosevelt addresses the Nobel prize committee in Christiania on international peace. The event, attended by King Haakon and Queen Maud, drew Norway’s political and cultural elite. John Lund, VP of the Nobel committee, praised the speaker and the United States.
Defense witnesses claim Colonel Swope was in poor health for months and that natural causes may have caused convulsions in the Swope family. Sylvester Spangler testified the millionaire was feeble a year before death and feared he might die at any time. He and Swope had drunk heavily before Swope stopped, after which Spangler says Swope grew weak and fainting spells persisted.
Senator Gamble presented a protest from the South Dakota Dairymen and Buttermakers association against any modification of the oleomargarine tax law. The protest was printed in the Congressional Record. Gamble’s bill seeks $100,000 for Rapid City public building. Crawford’s bill raises Huron’s cap to $100,000 and was favorably reported.
Holton Kansas May 4 five persons faced county court trial for complicity in the sensational Topeka kidnaping of Marian Bleakley the incubator baby. Defendants include Mrs Stella Barclay once adopted the child Josef Gentry detective Frank Tillotson Robert Randolph and David Gregg. Marian Bleakley was recovered in Kansas City and returned to her mother after a court battle.
In Columbus Ohio at 1 40 a m today striking workers of the railway and light company voted to accept Mayor Marshall's peace plan. Four discharged unions will be offered reinstatement with pay equivalent to prior wages but without back wages or city employment. Ample car service resumed this morning.
Lamro residents approve a three day celebration July 4 5 and 6 to be a purely western event featuring roping branding cattle bronco busting western sports a brass band baseball and participation by Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indians. About $2500 is expected to be raised for expenses and prizes.
Des Moines reports the Iowa joint scale committee of mine workers and operators agreed to a 10 cent per ton advance on all coal under the new scale. Operators say when mines resume operations a minimum 10 cent per ton increase will be sought from all consumers including railways.
Washington May 5 director C Dana Durand of the census bureau rejected reports claiming city population estimates from the new census. He said no official population announcements for any city state or the nation will be made for some time and that missing enumerator returns prevent any official statement or estimate at present.
The United States Weather Bureau Chicago station issues the Nebraska forecast. Showers tonight and Friday with warmer conditions tonight and colder weather in the western portion on Friday.
George Poell, county clerk of the Nebraska county, resigns after an investigation found he raised certain receipts of employees and retained funds. He turned over 500 dollars of excess fees and will be replaced by Richard Gruensz, chosen by the majority Democrats. Poell claims all county funds were returned and asks further inquiry into his term.
Rioting in Hunan province pressures the central government over the Hankow Canton railway loan. Officials fear foreign influence and a clash with local leaders could delay the agreement. Authorities move to placate Hunanites and prosecute rioters and revolutionaries, with death sentences avoided.
In St Louis in May representatives from the American Federation of Labor and farmers groups meet to form the National Farmers Scientific Cooperative Society. The aims include removing middlemen and curbing farm product speculation. The rally centers on grain men with twenty speakers.
The bureau of labor report to the senate reveals that 2,322 workers at Bethlehem steel works in South Bethlehem labor twelve hours daily seven days a week, with a large percentage earning only twelve and a half cents per hour.
Secretary Ballinger quotes a President's letter from last fall noting Pinchot doubted motives of opponents. He disputes Garfield's account of land withdrawals and asserts lands were restored within three weeks. Ballinger cites policy shifts since Pinchot’s dismissal and cites Taft on Pinchot’s perceived weakness in motives.
Three Dallas men tied the knot recently. William Lumber, pool hall owner, wed Miss Kate Montgomery from Pierce Nebraska. Lis McNeely, McNeely postmaster and state committeeman candidate, married Miss Marion Kent Hurd of Dubuque. Robert W. Molitor, young lawyer, left for Grand Junction Colorado to marry Miss Anna Griffin. The bride owns a clay hall near Winner.
A long night of dancing marked Mrs Erlive’s sixth birthday at the home of Mr and Mrs Henry Pichorling in Dixon South Dakota. The event hosted by the Rosebud Woman's Party featured music and entertainment with local guests celebrating into the evening.
By unanimous vote the state board of the Illinois Democratic women’s suffrage association accepts Catharine Waugh McCulloch’s suggestion to tour the state. The first party of women will depart Chicago soon for a statewide outreach with posters and a plan to visit every hamlet, village, town and city before election time.
