A laundry at the rear of the main general hospital at the Presidio, San Francisco, caught fire this morning and was totally destroyed. The blaze was extinguished before it could reach the main hospital, which housed about 1,000 patients.
Investigation shows San Francisco will not endure hard times after the disaster. Authorities estimate over 207 million dollars will be available within a year for rehabilitation, much from eastern and foreign capital. Cleanup advances, with unburned areas nearly normal, while the burned district steadily improves and police assist in locating dead bodies. Captain Gwynn doubts the coroner's 1,500 dead, placing recoveries around 600.
Mount Carmel Pennsylvania May 3. Quiet prevails but bitterness toward the constabulary runs high. All five wounded from Monday remain alive though several expected to die. Four squads under Captain Page patrol the streets amid threats of renewed battle if troops enter the town.
Embargo on Lake Erie traffic as longshoremen strike. about 6000 workers idle. Unions quit or prepare to quit, halting upper lake commerce and threatening widespread industry shutdowns dependent on lake supplies.
Milwaukee reports about forty vessels tied up and 800 idle workers due to the longshoremen strike. If the stoppage lasts, more than 6,000 could be without work. Also reported are two drownings in Kansas Lake near Phillippsburg when Lyman Mattison and nurse Miss Louise Keene lost their lives boating.
News from Mexico City reports the drowning death of five people at the confluence of the Minatlan and Coatzacoalcos rivers. The deceased include three Americans Alfred Sweeney of West Virginia Joe Purony of Texas and an unnamed Mr Fisher of New York and two Mexicans.
Sir Huon a Falsetto colt won the thirty second Kentucky derby for three year olds. Bir Huon owner George Long of Louisville led the betting with a clear finish. Lady Navarre and James Reddick placed second and third as 26 000 to 30 000 spectators watched. The Derby time 2 08 3 56 was a good mark on a slow track. Betting on the race set a new record.
In Washington on May 8 the senate committee on interoceanic canals discussed canal type for Panama but did not vote. The majority favored maintaining the Spooner act lock canal plan and avoiding new legislation. Expected executive session may decide not to report on the type of canal.
Washington reports President Roosevelt Attorney General Moody and Commissioner Garfield held talks at the White House about Garfield’s oil trust operations report and the forthcoming presidential message to Congress. The message is expected to sharply arraign oil trust methods with direct recommendations to be announced. In Texas heavy rain and damage hit Dallas Denison McKinney Bailey with 8.63 inches of rain and multiple washouts and destroyed houses.
The Kansas State Republican convention names Governor Edward W. Hoch and a full slate for statewide offices. The machine slate backed by current administration defeats the reform faction led by W. R. Stubbs with candidates spanning lieutenant governor to state printer.
Cambridge police ordered an inquest into the death of Mrs Leone Muenter wife of Professor Muenter. Autopsy findings report traces of arsenical poisoning.
With one more day of debate the senate circulated amendments on judicial review of interstate commerce commission orders. A proposal by Long Overman and Bacon would recognize court jurisdiction but require five days notice and two judge concurrence before any injunction or interlocutory order. Leaders on both sides show space for a substantial compromise though some insist on stronger review and others oppose any rate reasonableness scrutiny.
In Washington on May 3 California senators rejected an effort to have the government guarantee bonds for San Francisco reconstruction. Senator Newlands urged finance and ways and means committees to study the measure, while Senators Flint and Perkins warned against it. The resolution was referred to the finance committee. The article notes additional actions on the railroad rate bill and an army appropriation bill, including a $1.5 million Fort Mason depot and a $900,000 submarine cable to Panama.
The House completed the agricultural appropriation totaling 7 401 440 and passed the military academy bill totaling 1 663 115. Debate was brief with seed distribution provisions approved 163 to 82. An additional 1 500 000 for academy improvements was removed on a point of order.

In Gregory South Dakota May 1 a rain dampened celebration honored Governor Elrod and Senator Gamble. Gamble praised the Rosebud opening and urged Trypp County settlement while Elrod spoke on South Dakota progress. A Gregory victory over Herrick 6 to 0 capped the event as Gregory's top local team.
C A South assumed control of the Butte post office with Mrs A R Armstrong as assistant postmistress under the new management. The change was effective yesterday in Butte Nebraska with Armstrong retiring from the top job.
Lincoln May 3. The state printing board says 87 cents a page is excessive and declines the State Journal offer to print the supreme court reports. New bids will be sought. Most printing contracts went to small printers.
The Minnesota Dakota and Pacific Railway Company filed with the secretary of state a mortgage for 50 million dollars to Central Trust Company of New York. Interest is 4 percent. The filing date is May 3 and involves Pierre, D. and May 3.
The national convention in Philadelphia closed with the election of officers. Mrs D Phoenix Ingraham was elected president.
Manager Munn of Gulf Fisheries reports Ballie Stein seized by a Mexican gunboat last Thursday. Ten crewmen held in prison with no access to the American consul. fish cargoes rot on the detained smacks Pensacola and Mobile boats also seized. Munn seeks action through Senator Culberson to reach the state department.

Cushman faults money in elections and lauds hard work, while Oregon figures return to Congress with Mitchell and Ellis resumes service. Gaines and Henry clash over farm policy in lively House exchange.

A twenty ton flywheel broke then the main steam heater burst at the Mansfield Railway and Light power house in Mansfield Ohio last night causing a city blackout and stopping streetcar service. Three engines were wrecked and large machinery pieces were hurled through the roof. Three employees were injured.
Pat Crowe, the Omaha criminal, forced entry into George A. Warner’s grocery seeking Mrs. Meadows with whom he had become involved since release from jail. Jealousy and a desire to end the liaison sparked the disturbance. Warner and Ralph Fits Morris fired about six shots at the suspect during the incident. Crowe was arrested.
In Chicago on May 3 Judge Bethea granted an application for a receiver for the American Reserve Bond company. The Western Trust and Savings Bank was named receiver with bonds of 20000 dollars. The firm has been barred from three states and under postal investigation for some time.
Max Dittrich, a leather worker, confessed to killing eight women over seven years. The suspect's admissions came as authorities investigated a string of deaths linked to a female victims case in Dresden.
