A Burlington No 40 passenger train from Grand Island ran off a switch near Lincoln in the stock yards today. Thirty one passengers were injured though none seriously and no victims from Norfolk or northern Nebraska were reported. The engine and tender left the track and passengers were tossed into a heap.
Abi gail Becker famed in song across Canada for saving the crew of the schooner Conductor after a wreck at Long Point on Lake Erie in November 1858. Government awarded a farm, Buffalo ship owners $1000, and a New York Life Saving medal for her bravery.
Don Manuel de Aspiraz, the American ambassador, is seriously ill in Washington with la grippe and related complications. He was reported to have contracted the illness during a period of diplomatic duties in the capital.
Chanute Kansas March 23 An eight inch pipe line from the Chanute oil field to Kansas City to supply an Independent refinery has been contracted for 211000 dollars. J B Levy formerly of Ohio represents eastern capital and has let the work to a Kansas City company. Construction to start within forty days.

An unknown towboat with all aboard sank in the flooded river near Bellaire Ohio after hitting a channel pier of the Baltimore and Ohio bridge. The river rose to forty feet seven inches and receded slowly isolating Wheeling as trains and industry shut down affecting about 20,000 workers and causing large economic losses.
Architect Magenigin reports to Secretary Hartzell that revised plans for the McKinley Memorial are complete. Seven contractors will report around April 1. Trustees meet in New York May 1 to award the contract. Work to begin by June 1.

At the council of foreign bondholders offices in London and through AP reports the Venezuelan government and British and German bondholders reach an agreement to adjust and consolidate exterior debt totaling 28 million dollars. Guarantees are linked to customs duties at key ports including Laguayra and Puerto Cabello. New Negro Army Officer Washington March 2 Sergeant George S Thompson of the Twenty Fifth Infantry is named second lieutenant in the Philippine scouts, adding another Black officer to the army command.
St Petersburg March 23 A government party urges the emperor to signal Russia’s desire to end the war with Japan. Ministers, except war and navy, back the move supported by France and now German opinion. The plan relies on the emperor to authorize any overtures, with Japan expected to wait for a formal Russian approach.

An official army report states the pursuing forces pushed the enemy toward Changtu. On March 21 at 2 30 p m a large unit retreated northeast along the railway, with part of the cavalry halting within two miles of Changtu. Linovitch telegraphed from St Petersburg that he has no news of encounters with the Japanese on March 1.
Alfred Eddy of Standard Oil, consulting with Hoch and Coleman in Topeka, says Kansas daily production tops 26 000 barrels while the company can refill only 8 000 barrels from Kansas fields. He asserts supply and demand govern their position and refinery plans by the state would not aid, as oil from Indiana and Ohio will be exhausted before more is drawn from Kansas.
Public services held for more than twenty dead from Monday’s explosion. Business paused across the city as flags flew at half mast and buildings displayed long black streamers in solemn mourning for the victims of the disaster.

Conrad Schwarz aged twenty was hanged here for the murder of William Earle a telegraph operator at Yorktowa station. Schwarz shot at the operator after the safe was refused to be opened and fled the railroad station authorities say.
