Rome reports a grave scene as 60,000 survivors are expected to be landed at Naples by night. Messina railway station is opened to reveal scores of corpses packed together as people hasten to escape by train.
Washington reports the American battleship fleet, en route through the Red sea, likely to be sent to Italy. Beatrice Nebraska December 31 Daniel Freeman the first person in the United States to file and prove up a homestead is dead at eighty two. He filed on the first day of January 1863 and his patent papers show entry No 1 and patent No 1 signed by President Grant. Freeman fought to keep the Bible out of public schools and served in the Civil War. Survived by a widow and several children. The notice also reports a child’s death from poison and a near electrocution at Geneva and a freight classification hearing set for January 16 in Lincoln.
