Tokyo reports that after months of fighting sapping and mining Japanese forces occupied Riblung mountain near Port Arthur on December 28. About 500 Japanese troops attacked under heavy fire and captured the fort after dynamite charges and a fierce assault. the garrison withdrew with some casualties.
Tokio reports that December 27 Russian heavy artillery bombarded the Shakee river railroad bridge near the station and shelled Chishiang Tun and Shulintun. Russian cavalry attacked Meilin tun at sunset but were repulsed. Japanese pickets were enveloped and reinforced to hold. Three Japanese soldiers were killed.
Report from Chefoo dated 29 describes Japanese from Port Danny stating that during a night of attacks they killed each other in confusion. They had captured a hill they called Yanh Thu ban possibly Kee Wan mountain and withdrew only after the moonlight revealed the error.
In St Louis on December 29 an unnamed Italian, living with his two brothers, killed his brother after a violent dispute between the siblings. One brother allegedly became a maniac and a policeman, called to quell the struggle, probably shot the killer. The wounding of the two men followed a brutal confrontation.
Washington December 29 The president appoints J Hampton Moore of Philadelphia as head of the bureau of manufactures in the department of commerce and labor Moore also serves as president of the national league of republican clubs.
In Budapest the chamber adjourned to January 8 amid protests over government expenditure indemnity. Premier Tisza faced denunciations as a king oath was questioned and a bloody electoral struggle predicted by former premier Count Andrasy. In Cleveland a bail fund for Cassie Chadwick surfaced amid forgery charges. Chicago teachers elected officers W B White, W S Ashby, G E King.
Denver readers recount that the Supreme Court ruled it had no jurisdiction to halt the canvass of election returns for Las Animas and Boulder counties. Despite an injunction read through a keyhole, the state board awarded certificates of election to Republican contestants C Barela and H J Millard as the canvass proceeded behind locked doors.

The case before Special Master J L Sehofeld concerns a New York life policy worth 200000 on James Blair former general counsel for the World’s fair. The plaintiff’s attorney requested further hearing in Philadelphia and the full party including stenographers and clerks will depart St Louis next Monday.
In the Hartwear territory near Heelan a band of horse thieves led by Tahiti or Turner were traced into Nee Pakow. George Turner, alias Black George, was captured after a midnight confrontation in a hotel lobby. A Cyanitin officer shot in the struggle and Turner was found with two revolvers in his pockets and a loaded rifle in the entrance. The raid is described as one of the largest and most daring horse theft rings in the region.
The state canvassing board issued certificates of election to two senators, Carla and Millard, in Denver. Republicans are accused of attempting to seize control by discarding democratic ward votes and counting republican wards. All canvassing board members are Republicans.
Philadelphia reports Rev. Trvine disputes Bishop Talbot over refusing communion to Mrs. Elliott a divorced woman after secret meetings with Elliott. Talbot’s letter to Dr Upjohn cited as basis, but Trvine calls it unwarranted and a gross subterfuge.
