New York Aug 22 Roosevelt Provincetown speech unsettled traders early but later steadied markets. Reported that duties against unlawful corporate conduct aimed to protect innocent stockholders calmed fears and improved sentiment as clarity emerged.
Mrs Annie Bruce and her daughter Annie are bound over to district court on murder in the second degree for allegedly poisoning husband and father James Bruce with strychnine. The case centers on a cherry pie baked with poison after domestic troubles. Bruce, a Mormon missionary, died after suffering convulsions.
The International Stewards' Association in Chicago discusses flaws in creating a national university for hotel chefs and employees. Plans include a culinary education department with equipment from the Wineau School of Technology in Indianapolis, as representatives discuss the proposal with the stewards' convention.
William Jennings Bryan escaped unharmed after a Chicago and Northwestern wreck near Belvidere on his trip to the Rockford Chautauqua. Samuel Gompers president of the American Federation of Labor accuses the manufacturers’ association of financing injunctions to crush organized labor. He says the AFL will fight the cases in court on broad grounds and insists rights will be exercised despite consequences. He states he will not surrender his rights as a free American citizen.
In London the house of commons began considering the house of lords amendments to the eviction tenants bill. Most lord amendments were rejected and at 7:45 a m the members adjourned after naming a committee to confer with the lords to settle the differences.
The cupola on the site of the Carnegie peace palace collapsed at The Hague on August 22 after a supporting cable snapped. One workman was killed and four others were injured during the incident on the platform where singers stood for the foundation stone ceremony on July 20.
