Aug 17 reports an industrial war declared by railway workers across the United Kingdom. A 24 hour limit expired without a nationwide lockout. talks with the board of trade continued while trains ran normally.
Washington August 17 Dr H W Wiley the pure food expert testified that a ruling adverse to corn syrup manufacture interests by the bureau of chemistry the food and drug inspection board and Secretary Wilson had been changed to a favorable opinion without consulting him or his associates this added another sensation to the house inquiry into department affairs.
Jerome Magee of Omaha Country Club posted a 73 for 18 holes in the forenoon of the Trans Mississippi golf championship. Two short putts were the only blemishes as the eight remaining players moved toward the semifinal round. The Legg Fairbanks match drew the day’s largest crowd.
The United States Weather Bureau forecast for Nebraska calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Friday with little change in temperature. The forecast bulletin from Chicago notes no significant shifts in air mass or weather patterns for the state.
After a cabinet meeting, Taft is now said to be in line with vetoing the wool tariff revision bill. The final doubt vanished as members disclosed the veto message could go to the house late today and a few officers shifted to his view.
The House approved the conference report on the farmers free list bill by 160 to 102 after removing the lemons amendment and agreeing with all Senate changes. Coin was struck from the free list provision, and the measure moved to the President, who is expected to veto it.
In Fremont Nebraska on August 17 Dr George Byers of Snyder sustained a fractured skull and serious injuries when an auto carrying him to Scribner overturned after hitting a dog. Driver Hilbert Schoenick, 18, escaped major harm as the car rolled. Byers was rushed to Omaha for surgical care and feared fatally injured.
Lincoln August 17 Returns from about one third of Nebraska counties show Judge C B Letton leading the Republican supreme bench race with Hamer second and Rose third. Root, a present justice, sits fifth behind Cobbeyr. Dean Oldham and Stark appear the Democratic nominees. Beebe and Hall run close for railroad commissioner with Harman leading Furse by about 1290 on the Democratic ticket.
In Omaha on August 17 a light overnight shower and cloudy morning foretell gentler weather for the trans Mississippi golf tournament at the Omaha Country Club. Early morning matches featured special coups and championship play underway after ten o'clock.

Washington reports two House members Gudger of North Carolina and a southern colleague with a sporting turn have taunted fellow senators about breaking into the senate chamber at the noon hour. They propose a $0.50 payment if Cummins or Heyburn has the floor, $0.25 otherwise, claiming Gudger leads by $7.50 in the playful scheme.
An intense quake lasting one hour forty eight minutes was recorded by Georgetown University’s seismograph last evening starting at 5 48 p m The observer believed the disturbance occurred abroad likely in Europe New York also reported the event noting multiple shocks over a period starting about 5 31 p m with east west movement and lasting through the night
Fire destroyed Waldron hall the main meeting place in Fort Pierre drawing aid from the city and a special train with a hose cart. Early today August 17 the blaze prompted a city response as part of the fire department rushed to control the flames.

Missouri Valley city marshal George Butcher aged 55 was killed at 4 PM on a Northwestern freight train when two tramps opened fire as he attempted to arrest them. A posse of about 100 pursued, bloodhounds were sent from Fremont, and the fugitives were last seen in a cornfield west of town. descriptions match two escapees from Anamosa penitentiary.
An unusually severe thunder storm swept Lincoln on August 17 bringing 0.21 to 0.5 inches of rain and rainfall reported across the state. No damage to railroads reported.
Rome, Aug. 17. Physicians report the pope has a normal temperature and shows improvement. For the first time since his illness grew serious they allow a departure from the austere diet, ordering a small serving of rice in chicken broth and stewed fruit.
A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Theodore Roosevelt Jr in San Francisco at 2 50 this morning. Mother and child are reported in satisfactory health. The Roosevelts, married, have made their home in the city where Mr Roosevelt is engaged in business.
Arthur Stone, driver of a Queen monoplane, plunged into Lake and stayed afloat for over thirty minutes before rescue. His wife’s insistence on a life preserver helped avert tragedy at the international aviation meet. Other pilots survived perilous spins and crashes as gusting winds menaced the field.
The Chicago funeral for St Croix Johnstone follows a fatal fall from an aeroplane at an aviation meet. William R. Badger also died last Tuesday in the same incident. Flowers formed a t span in tribute as companions attend and cremation is planned for Johnstone. Badger’s funeral is set for Pittsburg and the program faces potential delays from weather and hazardous conditions noted during the event.

Ferdinand Schultz, 85, a lifelong Nebraska resident and former inmate, died of paralysis at the Stanton county poor farm. He traveled toward Toledo by train, hoping Onto bankers would meet him in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He weighed 219 pounds at entry, 150 on release, and left in improved health per the prison physician.
Senate and House conferees reached a complete agreement to remove the judiciary recall provision from the Arizona Constitution and to provide for a New Mexico Constitution amendment. The deal is said to satisfy Taft and likely advance statehood for the two territories this session.
