In Joliet Illinois four lodges of the Amalgamated Association voted to obey President Shaffer’s strike order. The plant will close at noon, risking nearly 3000 jobs as Tighe and Davis urged unity and nonunion recruitment. Tighe then departed for Milwaukee.
Pittsburg Aug 16 Efforts to settle the United States Steel strike by the Amalgamated Association continue with B M Caldwell acting independently to sketch a settlement basis he plans to present to steel executives He met with strike leaders and reportedly with President Shaffer for over two hours while both sides deny overtures yet acknowledge the plan is under consideration Carnegie Wellsville and McKeesport plants show mixed activity with nonunion moves and watchful pickets maintaining good order overall in the strike districts
The Press reports J Pierpont Morgan plans the greatest union of labor and capital for the age. He intends to set aside United States Steel stock for inside figures among the 165 000 workers in the steel trust to form a partnership between shareholders and the employer.
Textile workers in Fall River mills consider a strike if wage cuts of about 15 percent are attempted. The decision followed a textile council session held last night as leaders voiced strong opposition to the proposed reductions.
A motion recommends each organization Amyated resistance to a wage reduction, arguing the proposition is unbusinesslike and unjustifiable given the present condition of the cotton manufacturing industry.
Kingston reports the Hrntiah steamer Darien arrives with news of heavy fighting near Panama and Colon. Rebels advance on the town, many wounded. government troops also suffer casualties. Namouna is largely useless after botched heavy guns. Darien passengers flee Colon to avoid danger and conscription. Both sides commit atrocities amid reprisal killings.
Second Lieutenant Walter Grant of the Sixth Cavalry, while scouting near Taal, Batangas province, captured Colonel Martin Cabrera and his adjutant along with six other insurgents. Cabrera had led insurgent forces in southern Batangas and areas west of Batangas City. Earlier, Colonel Panganiban and 20 men surrendered near Lazos with rifles and ammunition, after taking oath of allegiance. Captain Folicarple and five men from Malvar's command also surrendered, choosing peace over pay.
Former Havana postmaster E. P. Thompson is convicted and must pay a 400 dollar fine or face six months in jail. He faced charges he issued four 400 dollar money orders for himself and replaced cash with a due bill, then withdrew 490 dollars after an impending inspection.
Telegraph dispatch from Washington reports Inspector Houck of the St. Louis division has caused the arrest of Walter Stratton for complicity in the Missouri Kansas and Texas train robbery near Caney Indian Territory. Evidence is complete against six of the nine men in custody.
Senator C. W. Fairbanks of Indiana addressed several thousand veterans at the Camp General Sickles reunion in Hutchinson Kansas yesterday. He received a warm reception from the state G A R gathering in the city.

Tropical storm off the gulf canal isolates Mobile Alabama from the world. Water floods the Western Union office, the AP operator clings to a switchboard above rising floodwaters, and the storm damages mobile fronts while flights of resorts along Mississippi sound face danger. Advices place Flomaton struck at 6 pm with trains halted and a Dixie Lumber mill reportedly carried away, killing several workers.
A Gulf coast storm plowed across the coast from Pensacola with telegraph and telephone wires down. News from Port Eads is cut off while ships fear for sea ventures and residents retreat to higher ground along the river. Casualties mount along the delta from Buras to Pass L’Outre as vessels founder and the Chenlere Caminada and Grand Isle region remains cut off.

Des Moines August 16 The winter oath of health and board of medical examiners met with one member absent from Europe. Dr F C Tready was cited for irregularities and to stand trial. Drs Gibson Adams and Powers were named as delegates to the American Public Health Cancelathon in Buffalo next month. Kennedy secretary will write a paper. The board granted certificates to embalmers and to 67 physicians to practice medicine in town.
Arch Rock near Alcatraz Island and Lime Point, a major navigational obstruction, was demolished using more than 30 tons of nitro gelatine. An electric charge triggered the blast, scattering rock and debris over a wide area and sending a water column over 1000 feet high. The explosion harmed marine life including three quantities of fish.
Ponder Nebraska August report from farmer Pfred Smith who lost four cattle to anthrax after scattering carcasses to hogs and dogs. His big dog and a few others died. he cut his finger and sought a doctor as swelling and fear mounted.
Marshalltown Iowa reports deputy postmaster Kruskeopf vanished after a cash shortage appeared in accounts. Inspectors traced discrepancy, a marshal responded but found no one. Kruskeopf had worked ten years and boarded no train after purchasing a Cedar Rapids ticket. In San Francisco, C M Hays reportedly resigns as Southern Pacific president amid powers curtailment and transfer of control to Tarriwian interests. under contract for five more years at 55000 yearly.
Ardmore August 16. W D B Burney Indian commissioner in the matter of townsite property appraisal was dismissed from the service by acting Interior secretary Thomas Ryan. Burney refused to appraise townsite property after being advised by Governor Johnston of the Chickasaw nation not to do so.
Washington announces a warship will proceed to the Pacific side of the isthmus with orders not yet fixed beyond San Francisco. Either the ship or the Ranger will be sent to the area.
Cedar Rapids reports the Pythian grand lodge adjourned to meet next year in Des Moines with the date to be set by grand officers. George W Eastwood of Monticello was elected grand vice chancellor.

Harvey Scott of Faribault Minnesota wills $70 000 fortune to be burned due to lack of suitable charity.
