The Terra Nova rescued Anthony Fiala and team members of the Fiala polar expedition near Honningsvaag Norway on August 10. The American ship that carried the expedition was crushed by ice early in the winter of 1903 04 and lost with much of its coal and provisions. one Norwegian seaman died of natural causes.
Governor John A. Johnson announces mediation effort after receiving many calls from business groups as the standoff between the Northern Pacific and the Order of Railway Telegraphers nears a week. He invites Hill, Elliott, and Perham to settle differences and restore traffic with possible commission aid.
John Walters and his two sons drowned while fording Hickory creek near McCune Kansas as heavy rains swelled the stream. The trio attempted to cross with a bead of hay when the waters swept them away.
The Bennington court of Inquiry resumes listening to testimony and authenticating documents. It is expected the board will file its report within a day or two.
At the Lewis and Clark exposition in Portland on August 10 the Custer massacre was faithfully re created. A Lincoln woman, Mrs. Gilson, registered at the Grand Hotel in Omaha and, unsettled since mid June, feared her husband T. Gilson was in danger after a Lake Shore wreck claim. She planned to go to Sioux City, leaving with a note to Chicago contact.
Attorney General Norris Brown says Douglas county must extend the assessment of Woodmen of the World and Woodmen Circle reserves in the county clerk’s books or mandamus proceedings will be started. He calls the board’s removal of a $3 900 000 reserve assessment unauthorized and null.
Announcement that a new church edifice of up to 500000 dollars will be built as an exact duplicate of the St Thomas Episcopal church in New York's fashionable district. Rev Ernst M Stires announced the plan and large donations have been offered including a 50000 dollar check.
Oyster Bay August 10. President Roosevelt left Oyster Bay at eight this morning on what may be his last trip of the summer at Sagamore Hill. He will address the United Mine Workers and Catholic Total Abstinence union at Wilkes-Barre this afternoon and speak at the Chautauqua Assembly in Chautauqua, New York tomorrow.
In Meeteetse Wyoming a deadly feud between J A areas fer hotel owner and George Slane culminates in a rooming house confrontation. Slane shoots five times and mortally wounds Meeteetse hotel proprietor with a shotgun while Marcarser is fatally wounded. Slane survives.
The International Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen begins a three day season in Toronto with about 800 delegates in attendance, including a large contingent from the United States. The event features formal meetings and proceedings.
Denver dispatch details the Western bank failure with assignee Henry M. Henley named. L. A. Imboden, a principal Denver Savings stockholder, is tied to both banks and sought funds in St Louis as a run loomed.
James J. Hill says he will not intervene on the strike against Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads. He states the fired workers refused to follow orders and warns against plots to cripple the railroad during a busy crop movement season.
