Soldier at Caney and Santiago recounts Cuba campaign
Barry Barbee returned home on a 230 day sick furlough after enlisting at Newton in March 1897 and serving in Co C 224th Infantry. He fought at El Caney on July 1 with his regiment, witnessed the surrender at Santiago, and later spent time in Long Island hospital. He notes malaria illness, describes sickness among troops after surrender, and states his term is three years with orders to return to Fort Cook before Manila.
