Death of Col John Meyer in Newton Iowa
Col John Meyer a long prominent Newton resident and veteran of the 28th Iowa Infantry died May 13 after a lifetime of public service. Born 1824 in Bellefonte Pennsylvania he educated at Oberlin and Lincolns era colleges, moved to Iowa in 1856, ran a grocery, served in the state legislature, and led Company K 28th Iowa. He was a respected abolitionist, school board member, city official, and trustee of Iowa College Grinnell. He left one surviving daughter Mrs Cornelia Fisk and his wife died in 1895. Funeral held at Congregational church with Rev Smith and Company K pallbearers.

Farewell to Newton as Patterson Family Heads to Zion City
Forrest Patterson and his family left Newton for Zion City where he will work in the express office. A longtime Dowieist, Patterson has been a trusted agent for the U S Expressco here for eighteen years and owns several thousand dollars. His move follows deep local regard and support from friends and neighbors.

Strange Case of Matt Newton At Fort Dodge Hospital
Four months after a January accident at the Fort Dodge courthouse a carpenter’s fall left Matt Newton with a skull fracture. In Fort Dodge hospital doctors found no visible injuries but his insanity was later traced to the skull injury. After surgeries at Independence Insane Asylum he regained some memory and began to recover, though remains frail. He now stays with his aunt in Newton and hopes to return to his former health.

The school board reelects most teachers at a meeting last Tuesday while four resign. Lettie Earley heads to Oberlin to study music, Mary Lister to Cedar Falls Normal College, Oda Fuller to Mt Pleasant likely Iowa Wesleyan, and Mr Thompson to start a new home life under a new name. New hires are Etta Northup Baxter Elsie Mendenhall Lynnville Grace Wilson Newton Blanche Winn Newton, all with prior experience and expected success. Taylor and R. K. Parmenter also traveled to southern Illinois last week.

Little Girl Bearded and Injured in Tea Kettle Accident

Beloved Palo Alto Resident Robert Blizzard Dies at 53
Robert Blizzard known as Bob Blizzard died Monday evening May 12 in Palo Alto township at about eight o clock after a period of illness. Born June 17 1847 in York County Pennsylvania he moved to Iowa as a youth and served in the Ninth Iowa Cavalry 1863 66. He married Dinah Clark in 1877 and leaves three sons Walter Logan Clark and a daughter Donna. A Republican and local prominent figure he will be mourned by many. Funeral services were held at his home at 2 p m Wednesday conducted by Rev. R F Chambers of the First Presbyterian Church and burial followed in Palo Alto cemetery.

Large attendance at the funeral of Henry L. Kissel at the Kitsel home on North Farmer Street. Rev Leitzel preached a fine discourse and music was provided by local artists. Pallbearers were former comrades from Company B Thirteenth Iowa, with Murphy Band escorting Odd Fellows to the cemetery. Also reported are the Central District Convention of Christian churches in progress, Jim Holtz’s smallpox quarantine after returning from Des Moines, and A J Kapple leasing the Cottage Hotel in Kellogg to run as a tavern.
