German man commits suicide near Baxter in melancholy episode

Chris Luthi a German resident living with his brother Charles north of Baxter shot himself in the front yard, dying instantly. John A. Seaton witnessed the body soon after. The 32 year old unmarried man, greatly grieved by his sister’s death six months earlier, had been prone to spells of melancholy.

J A C Alumni Reunion Planned With W O McElroy

W O McElroy of the class of 81 from Iowa Agricultural College will attend an Ames reunion of the first ten classes from 72 to 81. Alumni will tent on the grounds for three days Wednesday through Friday with an address by Henry Watterson of the Louisville Courier Journal.

Old time actor visits Newton as plans for Boone & Dunn

Charlie Coon of New York, long with Edwin Booth and Wallack, stays in Newton visiting Fritz Boone and arranging plays. Newton Bicycle Club approves a Tuesday run, adopts uniforms in navy blue, grey knickerbockers and caps, and designs club badges. The club also to aid July 4 parade with a dress parade.

Children’s Day Offering for Foreign Missions Tops $30

Last Sunday the Christian Sunday school held its annual Children’s Day for Foreign Missions. Morning class collections totaled $28.07 led by Mrs C EF Boyd’s small girls $10 Young Ladies Bible Class $5.80 and Mrs Shepherd’s infant class $4.29. An all child entertainment in the evening drew a crowded crowd and added enough to push the day’s total over $30.00.

Stock shipments on the Rock Island road this week

Over the Rock Island road this week shipments included cattle to Chicago on Saturday June 1 by George Kelley, hogs to Chicago on Wednesday June 5 by Mobberly Bros, and horses to Pittsburgh on Friday June 7 by Wells and Denniston. Also a car of horses to Brooklyn New York by Fred McMurray.

Runaway buggy injures Mrs Whitehead and Alice near Mingo

Mrs. Austin Whitehead and her daughter Alice escaped serious harm after their buggy was jolted by a frightened horse. Mrs. Whitehead suffered a deep facial wound, with initial fears of fatal injury, while Alice sustained scratches and bruises but is not seriously hurt. The horse belonged to Mr. Whitehead and was later recaptured in Mingo.
