The Commerce Department reports May 1977 trade deficit at 1.2 billion, aided by a drop in foreign oil and coffee imports. Exports rose to a 1977 high of nearly 10.4 billion while total imports fell to about 11.6 billion, yet the five month deficit nears a record 9.8 billion.
Southwestern Bell manager Jack King announced a 470000 improvement project to install underground cable from West and Old Main to S 14th. The work aims to support Newton's growth as 3329 telephones were added in five years, bringing total to 14608.
Harvey County ASCS director John Drach says wheat damaged by recent wet weather will qualify for disaster payments. Farmers must file disaster credit applications before destroying acreage. If harvest yields are low, eligibility may extend. damage is appraised and payments calculated using 0.5765 times established yield, then multiplied by the smaller of the wheat allotment or platted acreage.
The Harvey County Board of Commissioners granted preliminary approval to a $52,042 CMHS budget for 1978, subject to funds being available. The total CMH budget is $238,664, funded mainly by client fees and miscellaneous funds, with the county share rising from $50,000 in 1977.

Waldo Harms a 70 year old Whitewater man remains in stable condition at St. Francis Hospital Wichita after a Friday night explosion and fire at his rural Whitewater home.
Warren Therell Bright Warren, 32, Hut chinson, began serving a life term at Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing for aggravated kidnapping of an 18 year old Burrton girl. Sentencing occurred June 21 after a June 9 verdict. bond on appeal denied and a prior motion for a new trial was also denied.
Sheriff Galen Morford stated Harvey County Jail is equipped with a smoke detecting alarm system and flame resistant, non toxic foam mattresses. He noted detectors were installed about two years ago after a prior inmate smoke incident.
Police reported several thefts and vandalism over the weekend. Flower planters were taken from at least five residences including Arnold Guhr 609 N High and others on N High 413, 600, and E 8th 1705. Vandals broke a pickup window and a storm door at Robert Zimmerman 624 Myrtle.
