In Harvey County the Little Arkansas River rose toward 18.3 feet at Halstead and crest near 22.7 feet at Sedgwick, prompting evacuations of mobile homes north of Riverside Park. Rainfall amounts ranged up to 1.58 inches in Coffeyville and 1.38 in Pittsburg as county roads closed and erosion damaged township routes. Officials forecast scattered showers into Friday with highs in the 80s and 90s, and continued high water affecting roads and driftwood at bridges.

Meter maid aids in bell recovery
Newton police credit a meter maid with helping recover a 1200 pound historic bell stolen a week earlier from a storage shed. Marilyn Marshall spotted the bell in a truck on Wharf Road and a short time later officers arrested 33 year old Benjamin Allaband on grand larceny charges. the bell belonged to Jean Coleman and son in law Delbert Johnson.

City bridges inspected after deterioration noted
Engineers from Black and Veatch inspected three bridges along Sand Creek Tuesday. Broadway St. bridge over Sand Creek appears okay though concerns for the West 1st and West 5th St. spans were raised. A written report will detail whether deterioration is cosmetic or structural. Howard Knox, city public works director, said Wednesday.

Harvey County Commissioners named county representatives to the South Central Kansas Economic Development District board. Dr. Laban Peachey of Hesston, chair of the Harvey County SCKEDD committee, will serve on the district board with alternates Richard Chamberlain Keith DeHaven and the county commissioners Orville Schmidt Dave Friesen and Clayton Dey. Craig Oliver, the county attorney's summer intern and a 1971 Newton High School graduate, filled the office four days last week while County Attorney Jim Modrall and assistant William Bryant were away at the U S Open in Tulsa. Oliver, a KU Law School student, is set to graduate in May 1978. The internship is funded mainly by the Governor's Commission on Criminal Administration with the Kansas County and District Attorneys Association, leaving a local cost of 215 dollars for eleven weeks.
