Merger push for Rock Island to save railroad

Transportation secretary William T. Coleman Jr urges consolidation of the troubled Rock Island with other railroads to cut costs and preserve service. He says a six month merger could avoid federal funding, with lines like Southern Pacific and Union Pacific willing to invest. Coleman notes private ownership limits and cites three crucial proprietary lines for grain regions. He argues the east’s bankrupts differ and that targeted track reuse would lower revamping costs for a larger system.
