Urbana residents briefed on local crime situation

Urbana residents learned good and not so good news about crime in their community at a Thursday night meeting. Officials said there is no crime wave and crime rates are not rising. deputy response times average 15 to 20 minutes for domestic assaults, with a county officer-to-population ratio around .76 per 1000. The county increased sheriff funding by 38 percent from 2.4 to 3.3 million dollars, while three commercial burglaries were noted with no clear pattern. No link was found between Cracked Claw patrons and crime. Community watch leaders urged involvement as area crime mirrors other growing counties with property destruction and thefts from vehicles. One resident and 31 others faced repeated subpoenas over mailbox destruction.
