Calendula the misnamed pot marigold in gardens and history

Calendula officinalis is not a close relative of Tagetes marigolds. Native to Southern Europe and possibly the Middle East, it was known in Greece by 4th century B.C. The pot marigold name comes from large doorstep plantings for ornament cooking and medicine. Calendula was used medicinally in Civil War and World War I, with reports of hemostatic effects and antiseptic juice. It spread from Europe to America by the 17th century and remains a bright, easy garden annual symbolizing grief and despair due to its closed flower at night.
