Byrd Defends University Spending in Maryland Campaign

Dr. H. C. Byrd Maryland gubernatorial candidate told Rotary Club listeners that the University of Maryland delivers services for the dollar far beyond many state institutions. He defended the university building program and cited the hospital, a Negro college at Princess Anne, the agriculture college, and 93 abroad units, noting no state funds supported the abroad units and a $100,000 reserve was accrued. He argued the endowment backed Asphalt Institute construction will liquidate in 18 years, calling it a fair state bargain as part of a broader plan to translate university efficiency into government. He credited the Herd Improvement Association with reducing childhood TB and boosting dairy production, and urged more spending on the hospital and medical school. He concluded that the university budget totals about $21 million annually with less than half from the state, and that the building program uses federal support rather than state cash. Other Rotary guests included Sterling Byrd and local officials.
