UN speed action on unifying Korea urged
Eight nations urged the United Nations to hasten Korea unification and empower General Douglas MacArthur to decide whether to move troops to the China border. Britain led the resolution, seeking UN forces to occupy parts of Korea until elections and stability are achieved. The plan faces Soviet bloc opposition in the Security Council where discussion was delayed to tomorrow. India hinted at joining opposition to northward force, while Nehru argued UN troops should defend South Korea, not subjugate the North. Observers warned that failing to strike north could allow a renewed Communist threat within months. The sponsors span all regions, including Australia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Britain, the Netherlands, Norway, Brazil, and Cuba. The resolution calls for stability throughout Korea and elections under UN auspices for a unified democratic government.
