Early portrait of John Brown highlights black photographer Augustus Washington

Washington Postings at the National Portrait Gallery feature the 1846 47 daguerreotype of John Brown by Augustus Washington a Hartford free black photographer abolitionist. The show traces Brown and Washington from anti slavery fervor to Brown's 1859 Harper's Ferry raid and Washingtons eventual exile to Liberia where he became a leading sugarcane grower and politician. Washington left America for Liberia amid Fugitive Slave Act fears. Brown forewarned that crimes would not be purged until confrontation and blood.
