BGE seeks overlapping franchise in New Market area

Baltimore Gas and Electric seeks an overlapping gas franchise with Washington Gas and Light in Frederick County’s New Market area. A public hearing is set for Oct 17 at 7 p.m. at Winchester Hall. Washington Gas holds a countywide non exclusive franchise. BGE already has two Frederick County franchises from 1988 and 1994 and now requests District 9 coverage to serve the Samhill Development north of Md 80 and along Rye Lane and Gladhill Brothers Road.

Deal near to avert federal shutdown

Washington AP report says Clinton administration and congressional leaders near a six week funding deal to keep agencies operating beyond Sunday. Agreement aims to fund federal activities below 1995 levels until mid November while 13 annual 1996 spending bills move toward passage amid broader GOP tax cuts and budget plans.

Frederick County commissioners approved an antisavenger ordinance prohibiting taking recyclables from blue curbside bins and drop-off centers. Walkersville mulls halt on rezonings amid plan work

The Walkersville planning commission seeks to stop new rezonings and delay development reviews for four months until the municipal comprehensive plan is complete. The measure, advanced by Lin Snider, requires burgess and commissioner approval at the October 11 meeting. Existing projects in the pipeline would not be affected, planner Beth Passerle said. A Monday workshop outlined a draft plan to be completed in December.

State eyes performance audits for Frederick school boards

State Superintendent Nancy Grasmick says a performance audit bill could bring state review of how Frederick County schools spend money and meet standards. The plan would assign audits to a neutral Department of Education using outside consultants with costs shared by local boards, the county, and the state.

Unsolved murders in Frederick County two cases linked claim
