Alkmaar Cheese Market Preserves Medieval Trade Rituals
In Alkmaar Netherlands crowds gather weekly to watch the cheese market where 15 inch wheels in yellow wax are weighed and graded for wholesale buyers. Carriers in guild uniforms carry loads up to 200 pounds in a colorful parade as inspectors sample and price cheese. The market runs 10 am to noon with tours and a cheese museum in the weighing house tower.
