Fire calls reported in the 24hour period ending 8 a.m. Saturday. Automatic alarm at 101 Creagerstown Road triggered at 3:30 a.m. Woodsboro New Midway and Walkersville responded. Ambulance calls recorded fifty three total with thirty five emergencies and eight routine calls.
Bettye Safford, 46, of Riviera Beach, suffered burns to about 30 percent of her body when a candle set her hair afire during a voodoo ritual. Police say the ceremony was a con. the suspect performed it for 75 dollars and knew little about voodoo. No charges filed yet. case to be presented to the state attorney.
Saturday brings mostly sunny skies with highs in the low to mid 70s and cool Saturday night lows near 50. Sunday will be milder with highs in the mid to upper 70s and light southerly winds. Mountain areas expect highs near 70 Saturday and low 70s Sunday with light winds. Yesterday's readings include Cumberland 73.46 and Frederick 76-53. extended outlook calls for fair to partly cloudy weather with highs mid to upper 70s and cooler mountain temperatures, with near normal rainfall.
Nine officers raided a Mount Zion Estates home at 4 30 am and seized suspected cocaine other drugs and two cars used to transport drugs. Vivian Kruse 25 and Newark 39 were arrested with charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and related counts. Shelly Poole 21 was also arrested on marijuana cocaine and related paraphernalia charges.
A 35-year-old Wheaton businessman was shot in the head in his 12th floor apartment around 6 a.m. He suffered a head wound and a broken arm and was listed in critical condition. Police held a suspect Friday night as neighbors reported the gunfire and authorities found the victim unconscious in the kitchen dining area. He was in intensive care at Suburban Hospital.
Maryland Governor Schaefer preserves multiple holdovers from the Hughes administration in his newly created Department of the Environment led by Martin Welsh a former Army Corps of Engineers colonel. Hurricane Emily weakened over cooler Atlantic waters after striking Bermuda with gusts up to 112 mph, damaging buildings and boats and injuring at least 16 people. The storm disrupted power for about half the island, caused 230 damage reports, and forced the cruise ship Atlantic to be towed back to dock before resuming its voyage to New York City.
The Marriott Corporation purchased 210 acres along 1-270 at Md 118 in Germantown to support a new office complex that will serve as an employee learning center. Rankin called planning preliminary with no construction timeline or design details disclosed. Marriott, with 210,000 employees, has no price or seller details and is expanding its Bethesda HQ nearby.
A Mount Airy woman, Peggy Sue Gue, 29, was seriously injured but in stable condition after a Buffalo Road crash that involved Robert W. Sexton, 19. Gue was flown by helicopter to MIEMSS Baltimore. the investigation by Dfc. Donald Holigway is ongoing.
A 65-year-old pedestrian, John Washington, was struck by a Honda motorcycle on Georgia Avenue near Spartan Road as traffic paused for a school bus. Washington sustained a finger amputation and reimplantation and remained in fair condition. The rider, William R.G. High of Beltsville, was treated and released after being charged with several offenses. Police officer Dimitri Kornegay, responding to a burglary call, swerved to avoid a car and suffered neck and back injuries, treated and released.
