The Great Frederick Fair marks its 40 year Kid's Day tradition with free entry for children and reduced ride prices. Students, parents and educators praise the event for celebrating agricultural heritage and family values, despite changing family dynamics.
The Hawker Walnut Ridge Farm of Middletown won the overall dairy herdsmanship award for the third time in four years at the Great Frederick Fair. Evelen Hawker stressed the display educates urban visitors about the dairy industry while promoting quality cattle. The family tradition continues with four generations showing cattle since 1952, and this year a trivia display teaches visitors about cows biology and milk fat.
About 40 demonstrators gathered at the Great Frederick Fair main gate to denounce the fair board's decision to permit a car bearing Ku Klux Klan slogans in the demolition derby. NAACP leaders and allied groups urged peaceful, nonviolent protest and called for a weekend boycott.
Maryland Attorney General J Joseph Curran Jr said a car bearing Ku Klux Klan slogans could have been banned from the Great Frederick Fair demolition derby, countering earlier fair board claims. NAACP members circulated a derby application stating the track or promoter has the right to approve entries ahead of a continued page note.
Somali gunmen shot down a U S Blackhawk patrolling Mogadishu wounding three others. The crash near the port followed a rocket propelled grenade strike. Casualty figures include three dead and three wounded Americans. Pakistan and UAE troops returned fire. The downing marks the first helicopter loss in the 10 month mission amid Aidid faction clashes.

Frederick County man Glenn Lee Fox, 68, of 16117 Sabillasville Road, was killed Friday afternoon when a tree limb struck him as he assisted a logging crew in a wooded area off Quirauk School Road. Deputies and rescue personnel responded. he was pronounced dead at the scene. Fox, retired, had often helped loggers and fed horses for neighbors.
