NAACP backs noon boycott of Frederick fair over Klan derby
Frederick's NAACP leaders called for a boycott after a Ku Klux Klan member participated in a demolition derby at the Great Frederick Fair. The boycott runs today from noon to 2 p.m. with national HQ officers expected to join. Local groups pressed the fair board to publicly disassociate from the Klan and denounce its sponsorship.

At the Great Frederick Fair 4-H auction a 1150 pound cross bred steer owned by Ira Biser of Middletown sold for 17.82 a pound raising 20 493 from seven businesses and two individuals to support the Frederick County 4H Beef Sheep and Swine Club The sale marked a county record and the largest 4H livestock auction in fair history Buyers included Frederick Underwriters Holly Hills Farm Dairy Maid Dairy Frederick County National Bank Concrete General Mid Maryland Guns Tate Chrysler Plymouth Buzz Bible and Kim Stup Ira will receive 1 25 per pound from Wachter Paving for the steer Grand champion Dente Brashear 1260 pounds sold for 6 a pound to Giant Food of Frederick bringing home 7 566 Champion Angus reserve title 1235 pounds sold at 5 a pound to Frederick Underwriters Owner Kim Stup watched the winner go to the same buyer This event shows growing participation and interest in 4 H programs per Dave Axline beef cattle superintendent and 4 H is for everyone remarks.

Four students suspended over guns in Montgomery County schools
Four Montgomery County high school students were suspended after bringing unloaded or loaded guns to school. Gaithersburg High School freshmen had an unloaded handgun Monday. Magruder High School saw a ninth grade student with a broken unloaded pellet gun resembling a handgun last Friday. Springbrook High School had a tenth grade student with a loaded BB gun resembling a 9mm handgun Monday. All four faced 10 day suspensions and expulsion petitions. Perla gets 10-year term in bridge fire
former Rocky Ridge resident Joseph Michael Perla, 26, was sentenced by Frederick County Circuit Court to 10 years in prison for arson and related charges over a June 27, 1991, fire that destroyed a covered bridge at Loy's Station east of Thurmont. He and co conspirator Paul Samuel McCafferty, 27, burned Perla's pickup for insurance money. McCafferty also faces a 10 year term. restitution totals exceed 489 in Erie Insurance to 219,400.72 to Great American Insurance and 33,347.22 to Frederick County for bridge costs with payments due within five years after release.
