At a large Union party meeting in Philadelphia the ticket was chosen with Judge Yerkes named for supreme court judge and Elisha A. Coray Jr nominated for the seat by acclamation. Delegates from 61 counties attended. Henry A. Paul of Pittsburgh chaired the gathering.
New York Yacht Club officials released the official measurements showing Shamrock Jr as the larger vessel with greater sail area and displacement yet trailing Columbia by 43 seconds over the 30 mile course. Designer Watson kept waterline length down to offset other advantages. The result surprised observers as Shamrock’s larger canvas and spars yielded only a 43 second margin.

Judge Lewis delivered an emotional address urging law and the presumption of innocence. Citizens witnessed the verdict with notable solemnity and tears.

Buffalo Sept. 25 The trial of Leon F. Czolgosz for President McKinley s murder resumed with cross examination of Dr Mann who discussed the President s autopsy. Witnesses described the reception ceremonies and the moment the shots were fired. The prisoner was knocked to the floor and later lifted to his feet amid a scramble by Secret Service and artillerymen.
A fragmentary record shows Judge Lewis and witnesses including Foster O'Brien Nef Henshaw and others testifying about a powder burned handkerchief. The witnesses, many described as military or temple officials, offered similar practical testimony to Gallagher as the core case proceeds.
