FTC Assails Detergent Advertising

The FTC charged three leading detergent makers Procter & Gamble Colgate-Palmolive and Lever Brothers with unfair false and deceptive enzyme detergent advertising. A consent decree option would require lists of stains not removable by enzymes on ads and boxes. Procter & Gamble disputed the claim noting enzymes remove many stains and its ads claim effectiveness. The agency noted not all stains are removed by enzymes and some non enzyme ingredients aid stain removal. Investigations into enzyme safety in laundry products continue.
