Frederick County and the western sections of Carroll Howard and Upper Montgomery Counties will probably not be affected by a power shortage according to Gilbert Bohn local manager of the Potomac Edison Company There is no reason to believe this area and its 40000 customers will be affected by a power cutback Baltimore and several eastern Carroll and Howard County towns had the electricity turned off Tuesday as the Baltimore Gas and Electric Co reacted to a critical East Coast power shortage However the Potomac Edison Co which serves central and western Maryland reported a surplus of electric power to other areas The Baltimore Gas and Electric Co which reduced voltage by five percent this morning said that power was turned off for as long as an hour in selected areas in order to help reduce the massive East Coast power drain caused by equipment failures in other states and high temperatures The official said that at the peak of the selected blackouts 14000 customers were affected He said he could not estimate how many persons were involved The spokesman reported that power was cut off in Towson Annapolis South Baltimore Sudbrook Park Westport portions of Anne Arundel and Howard Counties and Finksburg in Carroll County Besides the selected blackouts the utility company joined with other members of the eastern power grid and cut back available power five percent throughout its system The Baltimore firm urged businessmen and homeowners to curtail use of electricity Warning of system wide breakdowns unless customers complied A spokesman for the Potomac Electric Power Co in Washington said that PEPCO had reduced its available voltage by five percent and had requested large users such as the U S Capitol to limit consumption.
