President Roosevelt, during a western swing, was found to have a swollen left leg needing urgent surgery in Indianapolis. He underwent immediate operation at St Vincent's Hospital, then was moved to a private room and later left for Washington on a slow-moving train. Doctors reported a circumscribed serum collection in the left tibial region and urged rest and a speedy recovery.

Amsterdam September 24 The Boer generals Botha De Wet and Delarey issue a manifesto appealing to Britain and the world for charitable contributions to ease widespread distress in the former Boer territories. They claim 30 000 Boer houses and many villages were burned, leaving the country ruined. The document is signed by the three generals.
Berlin reports a wedding at Werbze near the Silesian frontier ended in disaster when the house burned during the ceremony. The panic killed the groom and 40 guests as the bridal room was destroyed and the fire raged. A separate Chicago hold-up on State Street near Van Buren saw six men rob Mrs. Upham of a diamond ring and $50. The audacious daytime crime prompted swift police attention.
Jay Cooke, the Philadelphia financier, at his Gibraltar summer home near Put in Bay, suffered a brain congestion attack yesterday. Family members were present. a nurse heard a fall and found him unconscious. Medical aid was given and his condition improved today.
