German ambassador von Maltzan dies in Lufthansa crash near Schleiz
Baron von Maltzan, Germanys ambassador to the United States, was killed when a Lufthansa plane crashed near Schleiz in Thuringia as he traveled from Berlin to Munich. Also killed were the pilot, a railway official, a pilot trainee, an Lufthansa traffic man, and an unidentified engineer. The ambassador, long a leading diplomat in Washington, had arrived in 1923 and was noted as Germanys second envoy since the war. He had visited Frederick last year with his wife and daughter.
