Helms near preliminary victory on school prayer push
Washington AP reports conservative Sen. Jesse Helms close to securing the 60 votes to limit debate on a school prayer measure. Republicans say momentum could force a direct vote, while liberals warn they have parliamentary tools to block a decisive act. The proposal would bar Supreme Court action in cases where state courts or legislatures deem classroom prayer constitutional.

Commuters Offered Bus Service Amid Rail Strike Relief
Commuters who normally ride Chessie System trains were bused to points along the Interstate 210 corridor on Monday as a temporary measure during a railroad engineers strike. Spokeswoman Vera Jerleng urged listeners to monitor radio updates as mediation could alter plans, with two bus lines directing riders to Germantown Gaithersburg Rockville Silver Spring or Washington DC. One bus line continues to Washington via Rockville, the other stops at Silver Spring. Commuters should check train stations for which bus to take. the arrangement follows cancellation of an Amtrak service between Martinsburg West Virginia and Washington. Amtrak lines sometimes parallel Chessie routes, but not on the Martinsburg-Washington segment, necessitating bus transport.
