President Roosevelt held his first cabinet meeting in Washington after the Buffalo speech. He asked McKinley era appointees to retain their portfolios, saying he would follow the late president's policy and that resignations were not to be presented. It remains uncertain if all will serve the full term.
The Capitol rotunda held solemn funeral services for President McKinley with the Methodist rite, hymns, and a eulogy by Bishop Andrews. Notables, diplomats, and crowds witnessed the procession from the White House to the capitol as the nation mourned the slain leader. 53,006 viewed the body. a chaotic front-entrance scene injured about a hundred people amid the crowd. The cortege then moved to Canton for burial.
Pittsburg, Sept. 18. President Shaffer of the Amalgamated Association announced no public statement on the steel strike settlement terms. He will issue a circular detailing the agreement after lodges receive it, and then publish it. Manufacturers see reduced strike sentiment for now. Some American Tin Plate workers resist return without union recognition.
In Quebec on Sept 18 the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York saw a troop review for their reception and dined aboard the royal yacht Ophir. A luncheon at Spencer Wood was canceled to honor the late American president, and plans for regretful expressions were abandoned due to travel constraints.

Leon F. Czolgosz was arraigned before Judge Edward ix Emery on murder in the first degree for fatally shooting President McKinley. He refused to plead, while ex-supreme court Justice Loran L. Lewis entered a not guilty plea. The accused will be tried in the supreme court next Monday morning amid crowd hissing as he departed in mourning garb.
Sept 18 physicians who cared for President McKinley released a statement denying sensational reports and interviews alleging counter criticisms among them. They asserted a unusual harmony of opinion throughout the illness and said the unfortunate outcome was unforeseen and not preventable by any human agency. They will issue no further statements pending post mortem findings.
In the American League games Detroit beat Philadelphia 4 to 1 in Philadelphia. Boston defeated Cleveland 3 to 0 in Boston in an eight inning rain shortened affair. In the National League, New York defeated Brooklyn 10 to 6 in Brooklyn, and Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh 7 to 2 in Cincinnati.
Canton Ohio marks McKinley's passing with somber black drapery and dirges as the funeral train arrives. Honorary pallbearers and local regiments accompany the body to Canton House, with services at First Methodist Church planned for tomorrow afternoon and a grave-side vigil tonight.
Washington September 18 crowds gathered as the funeral train left the capital at 8 20 pm to bury the late president in Canton. Capitol doors closed after a final viewing while guards, pallbearers, and mourners marked the departure in a somber ceremonial scene.
