Washington September 17. A living lane of bareheaded mourners stretched from Buffalo to the Potomac as McKinley’s funeral train carried the nation’s martyred president to Washington. Mass crowds paused work, schools dismissed, flags flown at half mast, and bells tolled while the nation paid its last tribute to the late leader.

Thousands gathered along the Union Pacific line through Pennsylvania as the funeral train carried President McKinley.
