Former CIA inspector defends shellfish toxin stash
WASHINGTON AP A former CIA officer kept a secret cache of shellfish toxin despite 1969 and 1970 destruction orders. Director William Colby testified that the decision arose from the toxin’s difficult isolation and lack of future sources. The toxin was moved in 1970 from Ft. Detrick to CIA storage. Colby said the officer, a GS-15 branch chief in 1970, acted on his own and kept details from superiors. The officer coordinated with the project chief and the toxin’s continued storage was not publicly disclosed. Colby promised stronger controls to prevent repeats.
