Innovative ideas boost value for Tennessee farms
In Greenback and across Tennessee farmers face drought and low prices. Experts say agri tourism and specialty crops, like Bob Schmidt’s eight acre Maize corn maze, can create new revenue. Officials note marketing and education help nonfarm audiences, while forecasts show modest gains in burley tobacco and beans amid tough conditions.

Harvesting and handling tips for post harvest produce
Post harvest produce varies in treatment but stop process is universal. Produce should not be immature or over mature and storage issues arise for both extremes. Pre cooling slows respiration by immersing spraying or spreading crushed ice. After pre cooling store immediately. Harvest timing depends on weather with frost and root crops left in ground. Bruised or damaged produce shortens storage life and should be avoided. Onions and garlic need about a week in sun to dry while pumpkins and squash need two weeks. Do not wash root crops and clip green tops to reduce water loss and rot.
