Explosion Follows Smuggling Attempt Aboard Olympia
Norfolk Sept 14 Official statement by Lt Cmdr Van Doser details a blast aboard the cruiser Olympia after a five gallon water breaker filled with alcohol was found. Marine Corporal Yerkes and Apprentice Seifert died, Mas ter-at-Arms Custer and Apprentice Spavey were badly burned. The ship suffered forward awning damage as crew members, including four who carried the barrel to the aft deck, were exposed to a raging fire. Yerkes' body to be shipped to Philadelphia for burial.
