National Monument Project At Harpers Ferry Underway
The Harpers Ferry National Monument moves forward though plans are incomplete. John T. Willett leads as Supervisory Park Ranger with early offices and evictions of 50 residents on Shenandoah Street. Maryland and West Virginia properties, totaling about 500 acres in WV, are acquired, with Maryland adding 120 acres called Maryland Heights. Planning emphasizes slow, careful development as a monument rather than a park, with six district managers planned for the tri state region and future decentralization to improve local service.
