Japan again assures U S rights in China not impaired
Washington reports that Ambassador Guthrie in Tokyo cabled the state department that Japan’s foreign minister said there was nothing in Japan’s demands on China regarding the Chengehia tun incident that infringed Chinese sovereignty or affected the Root Takahira agreement. The U S was informed that the published demands report had alarmed officials, who trusted it to be untrue. The Root Takahira pact commits both nations to respect China’s territorial integrity and to keep each other informed on steps that could alter the status quo. Japan maintains the current demands do not threaten the status quo, so advance notice to the U S was deemed unnecessary.
