Portland Maine September 13 Republicans won Maine by about 150000 total votes in a record election. Carl J Mimmen Republican leads over Oakley C Curtis Democrat by 38800 with other Republican gains confirming solid delegates to both houses of Congress and the legislature.
The so called poor Little Rich Girl who fled a Pompton Lake sanitarium because loneliness drove her away is to have a home now. She wed George S Parkes of Anderson Indiana a wealthy banker, uniting two prominent fortunes.
Frederick Hale and former Governor Beft M Fernald, Republicans, won over Senator Charles F John son and Kenerah C M Sills by large pluralities. Maine soldiers marched sixty miles to vote while 470 total ballots saw Milliken winning governor with 30. City results favored Governor Curtis by a wide margin as a major shift to Republicans. A four to one vote approved limiting women and child labor to fifty four hours weekly. Progressives largely returned to the Republican fold. McGillicuddy narrowly lost the second district seat to Wallace H White Jr by about 500 votes. Governor Curtis called the election an endorsement of the Republican campaign and platform. New York plans a new hotel at 15 million dollars.
London dispatches report a fresh Allied offensive on the Macedonian front defeating Bulgarian forces in a thirty six hour battle. Paris dispatches note French and British pressure along the Struma and Vardar fronts with tanks and infantry crossing the Struma near Yenimah and trench gains near Majaza. German headquarters claim heavy fighting on the Vardar and Aire fronts while Russian Romanian actions threaten northeastern Serbia as Varna and Dobrudja come under bombardment.
