Skipjack Helen Virginia Sinks While Tied to Dock in Maryland
CHANCE Md AP One of the Chesapeake Bay's last skipjacks sank in seven feet of water while moored at a dock. Captain Jack Parkinson, owner for about 20 years, says the boat was deteriorating and questions why it sank Friday night. The Helen Virginia, built in 1947 and on the National Register, was used for oyster dredging and is one of fewer than 20 such sail powered work boats left. Parkinson plans to seek help from a fire company to hoist the vessel and funds from the Maryland Historical Trust for repairs. He laments losing the aging fleet as more skipjacks disappear each year.

Posthumous pardon for Maryland S&L figure draws no future clemency
ANNAPOLIS AP Jerome Cardin, dead since December, received a posthumous pardon from Governor Schaefer for stealing over 385 000 from Old Court Savings and Loan. Spokesman Joseph Harrison said no other S&L figures will receive pardons in the governor’s remaining months. The pardon, granted Sept 2, honors Cardin’s philanthropy and restitution, but has no impact on living defendants. Attorney General Curran called posthumous clemency a compassionate gesture with no practical benefit.
