Sarbanes Rails to Save Monocacy Battlefield from Developers

U S Senator Paul Sarbanes toured the Monocacy National Battlefield site to urge Congress to authorize about 39 million to buy the land known as Best Farm before year end. The proposal would fund 4.8 million in the Senate bill, while the House version has no funding. a joint conference is planned in two weeks. Public sentiment and fiscal concerns complicate passage as heritage tourism and local economy rides on preservation. The land, owned by the Mathias family and protected by The Trust for Public Land, could otherwise be sold for commercial use. A Civil War reenactment at South Mountain runs Saturday and Sunday near Middletown.
