Gerald W Beveridge named 1964 United Appeal Fund campaign chairman at Fort Detrick by Colonel Vincent Rowe. Kickoff Sept 25 at 2 30 p m in the post theater with division leaders receiving solicitation kits. Budget totals show Frederick County agencies funding Red Cross 26160 and YMCA 25700 among others for a total of 146280. Last year Fort Detrick personnel contributed 13794 27, up 3290 from 1962, with the drive similar to prior year and no quota.

Carroll County Board of Education will proceed with plans to build a consolidated high school at Winfield despite strong local opposition. Superintendent Samuel Jenness outlined classrooms and facilities while the county commissioners said taxation powers rest with the school board. The Mt. Airy community argues against the site, planning a taxpayer suit to halt funds, even as the board defends the Winfield plan to relieve crowding at Mt. Airy and Sykesville Eldersburg facilities. Occupancy aimed for September 1966 after a spring start and about a year and a half of construction.

Youth remanded after acquittal in deadly fire case
Jas A Morningstar, 16, freed last week of burglary arson and homicide charges, was ordered Thursday to a training school while a new auto theft charge is considered. Judge John E Raine will review medical and psychiatric reports to determine if Morningstar is a juvenile delinquent. The youth was found innocent by a Prince Georges County jury in the fire that killed four young children.
