Adlai Stevenson says current U S foreign policy is not bipartisan and loses prestige abroad, warning Democrats may attack it in 1954. In a Newsweek interview he urges constructive criticism and calls for calming tensions to restore America's international standing. He notes Republicans have moved to seize State Department postes and fired career experts. He says Democrats should act within time and circumstances as he would like to help.

Chief Justice Vinson Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack
Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson of the United States, a Kentucky native and former cabinet official, died early Tuesday from a heart attack at age 63 in his Washington apartment. He had served as chief justice since June 24, 1946, after a career in Congress, the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, and key wartime economic posts. The death prompts potential early action by President Eisenhower on a new Supreme Court appointment. Vinson’s tenure included the Rosenberg case and efforts to balance labor and business policy amid postwar inflation concerns. He was known for calm leadership and a lifelong love of baseball he played as a shortstop in youth.
