Ex-nurse who guided births and funerals, remembered in WV
Amy Mildred Sharpless spent 31 years delivering 984 babies while also coordinating cosmetic work on corpses for her father’s funeral business. The Blaine West Virginia nurse, born 1909, became a local icon in coal counties, delivering across Blaine, Kitzmiller, Mineral and Grant in West Virginia and Allegany Garrett in Maryland, with many families naming children after her and recalling her bedside care. Her meticulous birth records and early morning calls, including a 1937 delivery at 4 a.m., exemplified a life spent at the start and end of life.
