Brazilian scientist M Santos-Dumont, who came to Paris to supervise repairs of airship No 1 damaged in St Louis, will not return to the country. A charge by Jeffersonian guards that he caused the disaster may push him to withdraw from the fair’s airship contest.
New Jersey sharpshooters won the Dryden trophy with a final score of 987 at Sea Girt New Jersey. Ohio took second with 978 while the United States Marine Corps earned third with 989 and District of Columbia 937. Maryland posted 801. The trophy, valued at 4000, goes to New Jersey for one year with a 150 prize.
Police issue alarm for Percy Howard, a 23 year old bell boy at the Greek hotel on 42nd Street opposite Grand Central after clerks murder and safe robbery for 250 dollars. In Chicago, two burglars burned Miss Mabel McPherson with carbolic acid and escaped with silverware and jewelry.
Harrisburg, Pa. John Lauver, missing from Altoona for two weeks, was found at the residence of John Vessier seven miles west of Newport in Perry County. He cannot account for his absence, and witnesses say his frail condition suggests dementia. A prominent Altoona businessman and treasurer of the Altoona Times Publishing Co. may be sent to a sanitarium after recovery.
Charles Edmunds of Camden was instantly killed on a Pennsylvania railroad excursion train as he leaned from a car window. A man beside him allegedly shoved him outward and his head struck a freight car on a siding, the death deemed instantaneous.
A Moscow era dispatch claims General Kuropatkin’s forces near Liao Yang face a major clash as two fresh Russian corps prepare and armies reorganize under Linovitch and Kaulbars. The front reports heavy losses, rough roads, and renewed Russian impetus toward Mukden amid ongoing tension.
Reports from Mukden and Chefoo describe battles near Jiao Yang and Port Arthur with Kuroki reportedly killed and Japanese losses.
