Huge Program To Finance Scholarships
A Chicago report details a multi million dollar national merit scholarship program announced to fund college education for talented high school seniors. The National Merit Scholarship Corp backs 350 scholarships in its first year with Ford Foundation support and aims to award 1,000 to 5,000 annually within five years. Major gifts from Sears Roebuck Foundation and Time-Life back the effort, with grants covering tuition and college costs and matching funds to spur private industry contributions.
