The Walkersville community petitions the Board of Education to reconsider sending fifth and sixth graders to New Midway by bus until Walkersville gains space. Superintendent Pruitt and Principal Browning discuss space shortages, possible rental options, and proposed immediate building additions with architect Paul Kea.
The Board of Education said at its Wednesday meeting that complete plans and specifications for new school projects at Brunswick Woodsboro Emmitsburg and Walkersville would not be ready for bid advertisement until late September. Bids on locks for lockers were added to the Middletown High School hardware contract. New bus routes and driver assignments were announced amid overcrowding concerns.
President Truman will address the nation Saturday to report on homefront controls in the current emergency. He declined to say if any price controls would be used, promising answers in the Saturday night speech. The Administration seeks 40 million dollars to build an organization by April 30 to manage selective price controls.
Local reports say real screech owls in trees reduced starling numbers this summer with fewer complaints and little disturbance from noisy fireworks. French police rounded up 208 foreign Communists including several Russians in a dawn operation aimed at crippling fifth column activity. Residents demand written notarized assurances of local school expansion before sending children to class. Meanwhile Roy Wivell and wife of Emmitsburg announce the birth of their twentieth child, a son, with nineteen still living.
President Truman expressed belief that United Nations forces in Korea will make up for temporary setbacks before the week ends. He said no material change on the main front, noting U N troops are being pushed back at points but North Koreans are being thrust toward former dunes as optimism rests on daily briefings from General Omar Bradley.
President Truman said he would veto the McCarran Communist registration bill if sent by Congress. The measure, revised by McCarran to tighten anti subversive laws, would require registration by Communists and fronts. Senate GOP leaders expect most Republicans to back it. House already passed a similar registration bill.
A big tractor-trailer rig carrying $15,000 worth of motor oil crashed head-on with a Cumberland Valley Railroad locomotive just south of Martinsburg at US 11. Flaming wreckage blocked the highway for hours. Russell Nichols of Lexington, NC, 26, was critically injured and unconscious for over eight hours. Perest Holmes, 38, also of Lexington, was listed in fair condition. They worked for Pilot Freight Carrier Inc. of Winston-Salem, NC. The Pennsylvania Railroad operates the Martinsburg Winchester branch.
A young soldier, Pfc. William C. Perschbacher II of Edgewood, wandered from his car after it ran off an embankment onto railroad tracks. The Baltimore and Ohio freight train struck the wreckage, scattering debris for 3,800 feet. He suffered a deep head cut and was taken to City Hospitals for treatment.
Tokyo reports heavy fighting along a 120 mile Korean front with Marines and Doughboys in hand to hand combat. Allied forces repulsed a North Korean drive near Taegu and Pusan as 20,000 Communist deaths were tallied in western sector. U.S. 25th Division and other units reported reinforcements and continued pressure while pilots attacked Red tanks and artillery.
