Pilots Survive Collision in Air Race Finale
Two pilots survived a mid air crash at the Washington National Air Races finale in Frederick Maryland. Arnold Jerry Quarton 41 of Sonora California and Howell C Nick Jones 39 of Augusta Georgia escaped serious injury after their midget planes collided near the final laps. Quarton suffered three broken ribs and facial injuries but was listed in satisfactory condition. Jones walked away with bruises and nose lacerations. Officials will have the FAA investigate the crash which occurred a day after another fatal race incident. The winner was Bill Falck with an average speed of 192.8 mph.

Thurmont Men Accused Of Thefts
State police in Thurmont charged three local men after a weekend break-in spree at two Thurmont shops. Weddle, Schwaderer, and Fisher allegedly stole more than 1000 worth of goods from Claire Frock Company and Furniture Specialist Company, including dresses belts and drills. Officers say the loot was loaded into a car after the 1 a.m. break ins and the plywood door between buildings was forced. Schwaderer previously worked as a foreman at the furniture firm.

South Africa Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd was stabbed to death in Parliament as MPs sat for a session. A man in a Parliament messenger uniform attacked Verwoerd, who died from neck wounds. MPs restrained the assailant. The incident occurred two days before Verwoerd’s 65th birthday.
